AYIA NAPA MONASTERY
In the centre of Ayia Napa The famous monastery was completed by the Venetians just before the Turkish occupation of 1570, and is comparatively well-preserved. Once the focal point of the village, it looks a little out of place nowadays, surrounded by bars, clubs, restaurants and souvenir shops but it is a cool and tranquil place to escape the crowds. It has an orthodox church, a pretty fountain, some shade-giving trees, and a handful of ageing nuns in attendance, The church, cut into the rock, is partially underground and is entered by a descending flight of steps. To the east is a small Latin chapel, adjacent to which steps lead down to a 600-year old sycamore tree. Beside it stands a lavish conference centre of the World Council of Churches.
