Famagusta:
30 C

Contrary to popular belief, this cosmopolitan town isn't just a vast collection of pubs and clubs for the 18 to 30 crowd. In fact, there's something for everyone in this once sleepy fishing village. If you step away from the main nightlife area and take a closer look you will discover that Ayia Napa is full of history and tradition, making it impossible for even the fussiest visitor not to find something that will interest them.

At the heart of Ayia Napa is a beautiful medieval monastery with quiet, cloistered gardens and an ancient church. Legend has it that many centuries ago a hunter’s dog chased a hare into a cave and, when the man followed, he found a glowing icon of the virgin in the cave. A church was built in the cave and still stands today. Surprisingly this has been well preserved over the many centuries and a visit here is like stepping back in time. Whether you believe the legend or not, the little church in the rock is undoubtedly a very special place, with a unique atmosphere.

Immediately beside the church is the main square, with its fountain and benches beneath the trees. Every summer Traditional Dance groups give performances here and at the end of September the Ayia Napa Street Festival takes place, with local and international dancers, singers and musicians providing first-class entertainment for anybody that wants to watch. Performers come from all over the world to appear here (in 2001, River Dance came to Cyprus and the show was performed in front of thousands of spectators). One of the most beautiful locations to visit in Ayia Napa is the fishing harbour.

A great deal of money has been invested over the past few years in a major programme to revitalise the area. The results are amazing!! The entire harbour has been pedestrianised with cafes and fish-tavernas lining the front. A wooden walkway travels the length of the harbour and continues past it. At night, beautifully designed lights illuminate the area, setting the perfect scene for a romantic meal, a stroll along the harbour or just watching the moon float over the sea. Discover Ayia Napa. You will be surprised!
