| PROTARAS Just 13 km away from the bustle of Ayia Napa is Protaras, blessed with white sands and calm, warm, turquoise waters. It is the “tourist area” of Paralimni and one of the loveliest parts of Cyprus. With a deserved reputation for its windmills, which bring a quaint and tranquil beauty to the landscape, and its glorious beaches, it is a more family-oriented place than the more boisterous resort of Ayia Napa and tends to be favored by the older age group. Nightlife is busy but not as wild and chaotic as that of Ayia Napa. Indeed, everything is on a smaller scale than Ayia Napa, except the service. The McDonalds at Protaras has a “ride thru” service which works the same way as the more usual “drive thru”…but with mopeds instead of cars. The most famous bay in Protaras is Fig Tree Bay, with its crystal clear waters, golden sand and a small island about 100 meters from the beach. Other popular areas along the coast are Vrysouthkia Bay, Pernera Bay,and the secluded Konnos Bay. The beaches are dotted with tavernas and a variety of water sports facilities. For superb views of Protaras and the surrounding area, pay a visit to the hilltop Church of the Prophet Elias. Climbing the hundred or so steps to reach the top may not seem like a good idea at first but, especially in the late afternoon, you’ll be rewarded by a spectacular sunset over the district. There is also a tree of remembrance there, decked with tissues and handkerchiefs. Another chapel worth visiting in the area is the curious, deserted cave chapel of Ayii Saranta, with its natural skylight encased in a drum dome. It is located some 600m after the turnoff the Green Bay hotel. |
